Global Diesel Engine Manufacturer

Application: Machining cast iron using emulsion

This global company produces large diesel engines for power generation plants and large transportation units.

Using large machine tools, the sizeable, cast iron, main components are intricately machined all over, whilst wet.

Controlling the dust and smoke generated from this was primarily through the use of electrostatic and centrifugal filtration units, but due to the fact that the machining was carried out on wet cast iron, the existing oil mist filtration systems were unable to cope. The facility atmosphere deteriorated quite noticeably, with oil mist deposits evident on floors, walls and ceilings, and lead to complaints from the workforce. In addition, the existing filtration systems had to be removed and cleaned every 3 weeks.

ScandMist MA 400 D and 200 D units were introduced for trial purposes. Trial results showed vast improvements to facility atmosphere and no maintenance was required other than to check the dial gauges. When measured, the discharged air from the ScandMist units proved to be cleaner than the air outside the facility, and the filters were lasting for over 18 months on average.

Since the success of the initial installation, Scandfilter have been involved in complete turnkeys for this facility. The very large individual machine tools are monitored and recorded closely by ScandMist consultants and complete packages are now put together, including overhead plenum containment and curtains etc. The ScandMist units are mounted on raised platforms to rear of the machines.

The workforce, maintenance, and Health and Safety personnel have all acknowledged the positive impact that the ScandMist units have made.

ScandMist products and personnel working closely with the facility staff at this heavy duty manufacturing plant have made a vast difference.
